Life sometimes feels like we all just jump on to follow where it leads, not knowing where we’re going.
So often our plans turn to nothing, and what we don’t plan turns into some of the greatest parts of our lives.
Approximately 2 years and 7 months ago we found out we were pregnant. Planned.
A few weeks later Joy called and said “It’s two.” Unplanned.
I laughed out loud, got really excited and began searching online for minivans. The next year, for various reasons, turned out to be one of the weirdest, most difficult years ever as we wondered how we could possibly provide for two additional short people.
And now, on their second birthday I can’t believe how much joy my little girls bring me. From “Bye, bye Daddy, I love you” in the morning to jumping off my lap at night, I can’t help but smile when I think about them. On the flip side, I’m reminded how much heartache, stress and work went into those few months surrounding their arrival.
Sure, we all want to have lives free from pain, and we work really hard to plan it as much as possible. And some of that’s ok, but if life just went smoothly we wouldn’t have stories to tell our grandkids.
And that’s what makes life life. It’s the adventure, the joy, the pain, the questioning, the doubt, the work, the reward, the gratitude…the stories. They all mix together and what comes out is a life we didn’t plan, couldn’t write if we wanted, with surprises we didn’t see coming. These little surprises many times end up being the most rewarding and defining parts of our lives.
Like my two little girls.
It’s almost as if there are forces beyond our control moving our lives in a direction we don’t know, as we follow along to see what happens.
Here’s to surprises.
